Research the life and work of some directly-related ancestor or family member of yours, now living or dead, who was alive and at least 18 years old or older some time during the period 1939-1945 (born in 1927 or before), whether or not s/he was directly involved or affected in any way with World War II. Based on your research, write a minimum two-page double-spaced report on your relative's life and activities during those years. Include the person's full name, place and date of birth, where s/he was living in 1939-1945, her/his profession or occupation at that time, and known details of this person's life and death, particularly including how, if in any way, s/he was affected by or participated in World War II (or specific reasons why s/he was NOT affected by the war, if that was the case).
Be sure to indicate how this person was related to you--not just "my great uncle" or "my great-great grandpa," but naming names, i.e., "Leila Sutano later married Mario Fulano and they became the parents of my grandma, Mrs. Sofia King, who was the mother of my Dad, Dr. Rafael King." In your report you must carefully indicate the source of the information you provide. Any photocopies, documents, links or photographs you may choose to include add to the value of your assignment but do not count for the two full pages of required written report.
Normally, this is an individual assignment. Group work is allowed on this option for extra credit ONLY if the person you are researching is also directly related to the other student(s) sharing in the group work. Only ONE family report (individual or group) is allowed per student. Depending on the quality and detail in the report this may be worth up to 10 points (one letter grade) on your final grade in this course.

For extra credit, read and review ONE of the books indicated above. Other books, novels or videos are not acceptable for credit at this time. Only ONE book review will be accepted per student for extra credit.
For extra credit write your book review carefully. See this link for specific instructions on how to do a college-level book review and follow the instructions. Specifically, the body of your review should include items a. through e. listed on the linked instruction page, and the five body paragraphs in your Review must be lettered a. through e., carefully corresponding to these points. Your Review should be creative and engaged, detailed enough for me to see you have read the entire book, and must be seven good paragraphs long (including introduction, five body paragraphs, and a conclusion), carefully following the instructions on the attached link.
No group work is allowed for this extra credit option. You must do your extra credit book review individually.
Depending on the quality of your book review you can earn up to 10 points extra credit per book review on your final grade (which means up to a full letter grade increase per book review submitted). Book reviews must be carefully proofread, and will be graded for correctness as well as content and interest.
Of course, as always beware of plagiarizing reviews or comments from study guides or the Internet, or of copying directly from the book! Your writing in this extra credit book review (as in all work you turn in) must be YOURS, although, of course, you are encouraged to have the Developmental Writing Lab in EDUC 314A check over and suggest corrections to your writing. All extra credit work must be computer-printed (handwritten or online extra credit work will not be accepted). Points will be taken off for spelling, grammar or punctuation errors.
If you do not wish to get these books from the UTEP Library you are of course free to purchase these books wherever you wish. Any editions of these books are acceptable, including digital editions.
